Professional Garden Photographer For Designers, Brands And Press
Every garden design tells a story Share it with the world through professional garden photography
Garden design evolves through a dialogue between the designer, the client and the landscape. It can be a long process, and capturing the results with strong photographs is a natural next step. The moment the garden begins to look as if it has always been there is the perfect time to plan the shoot.
As a professional garden photographer, Joanna Kossak creates atmospheric images that reflect the designer’s vision and the character of the garden. Her garden photography highlights structure, planting and mood so each project is seen at its best.
Hello and Welcome
I’m Joanna Kossak, an award-winning professional garden photographer with more than 25 years of experience in editorial and commercial horticultural photography.
For five years I worked as an in-house photographer at the RHS, creating imagery for press, advertising and commercial campaigns, and photographing major RHS shows. Now a freelance photographer, I work within the horticultural and landscaping industry, collaborating with my clients to create photographs that visually represent their brand identities and resonate with their target audiences.
Whether you’re planning to showcase your garden to new clients, enter awards, or secure press features, let me help you share your project with the world.
Joanna Kossak is a finalist in the prestigious Garden Media Guild Awards in the Features Photographer category for 2025, a recognition that highlights my commitment to high-quality garden photography.
Some gardens are bathed in a golden glow in the morning, others come into their own at sunset. To capture your garden at its best, I aim to photograph it at the time of day that brings out its strongest features. I am also a specialist in garden night photography, capturing atmospheric lighting in gardens after dark. Nothing beats the warmth of a fire pit at night or soft lighting that guides the owners through the garden, allowing for extra time outdoors, especially when the days are shorter.

Joanna is an incredibly talented landscape photographer. Having seen her work I engaged her to photograph my garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and I am thrilled with the results. I briefed Joanna and she understood exactly what I wanted to capture within the images. Joanna is very easy to work with and she has a great eye for composition and I love how she uses the natural light. The photos have already been used in publications. I shall certainly be using her again.
Joanna has photographed many of our gardens and the reason we keep asking her to capture our gardens is because she does such a great job of it. She has a very keen eye and sensitivity to the sites and always delivers exceptional and atmospheric photographs that show case the project perfectly. A true professional and at the very top of her game.
I used Joanna’s services for several of my projects and it has always been a very positive and productive collaboration. She is very precise and thorough and knows how to perfectly catch the feel and selective details of each project.

Soon, the subtle colours of tulips and flowering trees will unfold at Ulting Wick in Essex.
Delighted to see my photos of this garden in the current issue of Landscape magazine.
This 16th-century farmhouse sits within a landscape that has slowly evolved from agricultural land into a vibrant garden. Dark timber barns frame the space, intensifying the colours of the planting and creating a striking contrast.
The garden opens under the @essexngs offering visitors a chance to see the changing displays of seasonal planting throughout the year.
Thank you to @philippa_burrough for welcoming me to photograph the garden, to the editor Rachel Hawkins for featuring it, to the writer Jacky Hobbs and to GAP Photos for making this happen.

Spring is on its way and flowers are popping up here and there but I am really missing that bold green of fresh foliage. It won’t be long before the gardens are full of green again.
Here are a few photographs of the Boodles Raindance Garden, designed by @catherinemacdonalddesign for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025, which I found really intriguing. The garden was rich with green foliage of beautifully layered trees and shrubs creating depth and softness throughout the space.
And how extraordinary is that Ginkgo biloba, trained into small shrub-like forms. Catherine is returning to Chelsea this year and I cannot wait to see what she creates next.

Tulips in Dunsborough Park, Surrey
In soft pastels and bright jewel colours, a profusion of tulips announces bright mornings and longer days to look forward to. Architectural details are a marvellous backdrop to this historic garden, and the Edwardian glasshouses, though time has left its mark, remain elegant and offer a beautiful framework for climbing plants and abundantly flowering early shrubs.
Grateful to @dunsboroughpark for the chance to photograph this stunning garden. Thank you to garden writer @gardenvisitoruk for the beautiful words, and editor Clare Foggett for the feature and front cover.

In winter, the garden reveals a different side: gentle tones of plants covered by frost, textures, and forms that usually go unnoticed.
I’m delighted to see this garden published in @the_rhs The Garden magazine. Thank you to the RHS editorial team and @lemonsandcatfood for the opportunity to feature this garden, to @mcwilliamstudio for trusting me and being so flexible in arranging this shoot, and to @gardenwithmartyn for bringing the garden to life through words.

In September light, this garden was still vibrant, full of deep textures and rich tones, with the first signs of autumn. Designed by @shelleyhjgardens unfolding gently from a sunlit terrace into a woodland area, and finally to a hidden garden room tucked among the trees. It began as a difficult site, heavily infested with Japanese knotweed. The lower part of the garden was waterlogged, and the whole space was completely exposed. Shelley transformed it into a garden that feels rooted, thoughtful, and authentic.
Thrilled to see this garden published in The RHS Garden Magazine, September issue 2025. Huge thanks to the brilliant editorial team of @the_rhs @lemonsandcatfood and to @nickbailey365 for telling its story with such insight.
And my warmest thanks to Shelley Hugh-Jones @shelleyhjgardens , whose design was a joy to photograph.
Some of the plants featured in the photos include Hakonechloa macra, Betula utilis subsp. jacquemontii (Himalayan birch), Armeria maritima, Stipa gigantea, and the Polystichum polyblepharum (tassel fern).
